Flame resistant magnesium alloy has been adopted in building material
Our flame resistant magnesium alloy made a result as building material. EXPANSION JOINT, co-developed by Gonda Metal and other manufacturers has been adopted in ceiling materials. The Building Standard Law Article 39 has been revised by the damage of the suspended ceiling collapse of the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 and enforced on April 1, 2014.

As the countermeasure for it, the development of EXPANSION JOINT was hastened, therefore Gonda Metal and ASAHI SANKO Co., one of construction material companies in Sagamihara, Japan for pursuing the utility value as building material aiming at the acquisition of “Noncombustible Material Approval”, have embarked on the development three years ago.

Material is AZX612 magnesium alloy (Al 6%, Zn 1%, and Ca 2%), developed by Gonda Metal, based on the AZ61 magnesium alloy which is excellent in workability, corrosion resistance and strength to weight ratio. Also each development of coating material for surface, bending method, holder and spring were proceeded simultaneously. As a result of them, finally EXPANSION JOINT was completed and acquired “Noncombustible Material Approval” (approval No. NM-3781) from Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) on November 12, 2013.
In November 2014, the EXPANSION JOINT passed Compression Test and the strength required to practical use is also confirmed.
In response to these results, in January 2015, the EXPANSION JOINT was adopted in the extension work of the small gym room at TOYOSU KITA Elementary School and in the repair work of the gymnasium at TSURUKAWA Junior High School in TOKYO.

The EXPANSION JOINT much contributes to preventing vibrations such as earthquakes, so it is expected to be used in a lot of suspended ceiling in the future. Moreover, non-combustible magnesium alloy is much expected to be used for various building materials widely in addition to the ceiling material.
