The 69th Annual General Meeting of the International Magnesium Association (IMA) was held in San Francisco, USA from May 20th to 22nd, and our company president, Gentaro Gonda, gave a speech. This time, 267 people from 23 countries (including 20 from Japan) attended, and in addition to the board meeting, many exhibitions and lectures were held.
President Gonda gave one of 23 lectures (four of which were by Japanese speakers) on "Development of high-speed twin-roll casting technology for magnesium alloy sheets" and "Flame-retardant magnesium alloy sheets." Twin-roll casting technology is a technology that casts and rolls thin metal sheets directly from molten metal, and is a technology that can significantly reduce the number of processes compared to conventional thin sheet manufacturing technology. In particular,GTRC (Gonda Twin-Roll Casting)has succeeded in increasing productivity by realizing high-speed twin-roll casting. Furthermore, GTRC can manufacture a wide range of alloys other than AZ31, such as AZ61, AZ91, and AM60, and we have been mass-producing AZ61 since 2008, which has excellent strength, surface treatment properties, and pressability.
He also mentioned the "flame-retardant magnesium alloy sheet" that has recently begun production. This product is not only flame-retardant but also price-competitive because it does not burn even when heated to over 800°C, and is made by adding only calcium to AZ61 and does not use rare earths as additives. Taking advantage of these features, it is expected to be used in building materials and other applications.
